How to Be a Scroll Stopper with Your Social Media Design

2021 Social Media Design Trends

Trends – much to our dismay skinny jeans are out, crop tops and big sole shoes are somehow cute, and *gasp* oat milk is the new almond milk.

Though we may be a little salty about the return of mom jeans, at the end of the day, there are some trends we are here 👏  for 👏.

Here are some of our fave social media design trends in 2021 that you need to know about.

1. Slab Serif FTW

Slab serif fonts like Roboto Slab, Brenton Slab and Klose Slab are just a few of many coming in strong in 2021. Give that extra emphasis with BOLD and EXTRA BOLD.

2. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Repetition of content in a carousel form is making a strong impact on social accounts. And it’s getting the point across.

3. Gritty Gradients

Does anyone else feel like they’re sitting behind the scenes of an episode of Saved By The Bell 🙋‍♀️? These pastel pops of color with some texture really have our 90’s selves vibing. Not only are they super bright and break up the scrolling, but they leave your viewers feeling refreshed and a little lighter.

4. Minimal Meets Retro

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and this trend speaks volumes! Try finding a super retro image by itself, rather than using any copy. The image is a great resting place for the eye and will make the viewer feel less like they are scrolling through a bunch of junk.

5. Type on the Rise

Give your powerful messages an extra punch with a simple effect in Illustrator or Photoshop. By giving that content a lift and applying the Rise effect, your content will stand out from the rest.

6. Hand-drawn Fusion

Make your killer images stand out with a simple hand-drawn element. It’s a simple way to give your image a little extra life.

7. Real life, Real Message

Torn images that look like homemade collages back in your college dorm are all the trend right now. Not into that style? Try using something like a paper background or a poster background with crinkles and torn edges. People are all about raw and real right now.

Closing Thoughts

Of course, like any trend, just because it’s “trendy” doesn’t mean it’s always the right choice for you. Customize and add on to these trends by adding details and other design elements that tie back to your brand. And have fun! Social media is a great place to test out new ideas and see what sticks.
